Gencon Packing Tip
04/08/2009
When Gencon was held in Milwaukee, my gamer friends and I drove to the convention. Space was not an issue in terms of carting home all of our swag. Now that it is in Indianapolis, I would rather fly and find myself with a limited amount of bag space. Now I could save some space by not packing a change of clothes and by attempting to find enough free t-shirts to make it through the weekend, but for everyone’s sake let’s toss that idea aside.
Instead, I have found that the “bag within a bag” strategy works for me.

Ready to pack for Gencon
First, find a soft-sided bag to go inside of your normal suitcase. I have reduced what I bring with me to one suitcase that I check-in and a carry-on bag. This may require you to put aside that last rule book you threw into your bag just in case, but trust me, you probably don’t need it, and if you do, someone else will have it. Once you are safely at your hotel in Indy – Ta Da! – You have a bag just for Gencon swag!
Granted, the poor airlines that are living hand-to-mouth will charge you for that extra bag on your way home, but in my opinion, it is worth it to not worry about running out of bag space to get that last must-have item home.

Full of swag!

I don’t remember if it was last year or the year before, but Upper Deck gave away really killer knapsacks that were not only good looking but very useful for carrying around the bulky Dragons of Kir game I bought that year.
Here’s to more awesome swag this year!
